TCCC In Partnership with Sustainable Putnam
Tompkins Corners, in conjunction with Sustainable Putnam, is converting their weeds to wildflowers!

We have learned from Sustainable Putnam that many invasive plant species spread around our rural area and choke out native plants.  It is our plan to join with Sustainable Putnam to determine which plants we need to remove, prepare our land for native plants and create a natural meadow come spring 2022!

PHASE I
Volunteers dug in and removed invasive weeds such as mugwort and covered the soil mulch.

PHASE II
Volunteers returned to then place cardboard and chips over the ground for winter.

PHASE lll
Volunteers returned in the Spring to plant hundreds of plugs

Curtis Watkins ~ 1949 - 2022
Friend of Tompkins Corners

Curtis Watkins claimed “Meadows” as his interest for forming a Sustainable Putnam group.  Those of us that joined Curtis’s group immediately recognized his organizational and interpersonal skills along with his drive to get things done.  We met in person and scheduled several work sessions.  Our team of volunteers worked in unison to attain our goal.   From the carriage house to the stream at Tompkins Corners Cultural Center we removed a mono-culture of mugwort, spread cardboard and mulch to smother any root remnants and applied several inches of wood chips. 
 
Before the end of May, we will have finished installing a few hundred native plant plugs, in effect creating a beautiful meadow benefiting our little slice of the environment thanks in great part to Curtis’s initiative and dedication to this wonderful project.
