"The natural environment is my source of inspiration and material.
Experience on family farms has brought me close to fields and animals and  that experience compelled me to look at nature’s creations. I collect my material from the land. I see them as gifts from nature. I try to respect the environment while foraging for my materials. Paper wasp nests, a material that I frequently use, are collected only after the wasps have died off for the winter."

"My aesthetic exploration has evolved from collage on flat surfaces to working on sculptural pieces, musical instruments as pure sculptural form. As a cellist, the violin family of instruments was a form I was drawn to. Stringed instruments are visually beautiful to me and my intimate connection with them has inspired me to "play" on them with my gleanings from the earth." - Pallas

"The Art Of Therapy"
Paintings by Andrea Jaffee, LCSW

Jaffee, an artist and LCSW practicing in Katonah, NY, merges her experience as a Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapist with art. Her vibrant acrylic paintings are drawn from pop, folk, Mexican, and protest art, reflecting personal insights and 20 years of therapy work. @theartoftherapy_ajaffeelcs.

Her latest series, "Music Is Therapy," features over 100 paintings pairing song lyrics with nature-inspired imagery related to musicians' work or lives. The series includes Willie Nelson, Lizzo, John Prine, Stevie Wonder, Tracy Chapman, Brandi Carlile, The Beatles, Queen, Adele, Grateful Dead, Indigo Girls, and Jimmy Cliff.

“My hope is that my paintings elicit a healing moment or experience for the viewer by observing depictions of nature and color, intermingled with words of therapeutic, age-old wisdom,” said Jaffee.

Jaffee’s work is deeply personal, influenced by her grandfather’s WPA-era art, her family’s social justice activism, her experience with dyslexia, and her journey as a mother of a transgender child. A Brooklyn native, she has been making art since childhood.
Lio Fenton Lio is a singer-songwriter, cellist, and jazz guitarist from Katonah, New York. He is currently a senior at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and will be studying music in college - the exact college is TBD!

"Beata Beach Porter: (1911 - 2006)
A Retrospective."

Reception NOV., 3rd, 2-4 pm
On view during events till mid December

Tompkins Corners Cultural Center will host a reception for “Beata Beach Porter (1911-2006): A Retrospective.” This exhibit will be displayed in our Maaike Hoekstra Gallery during events through December 15th.

The exhibit features the artist’s stylistically mid-century paintings, many of which were done on location in Putnam when Beata lived in Putnam Valley with her artist husband Vernon Carroll Porter (1896-1982), founder of the Washington Square Outdoor Exhibit in 1932.

Beata, the daughter of famed American sculptor Chester Beach (1881-1956), was born in Rome, Italy, lived and studied in New York City, and spent her childhood summers at Old Walls, the family estate in Brewster. She studied at the Grand Central School of Art and the Art Students League in Paris and New York. Her work has been exhibited at the American Gallery in New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Carnegie Art Institute, the Richmond Virginia Museum, the Museum of the Place of the Legion Honor in San Francisco, and the Southern Vermont Art Center. Four of Beata's paintings were acquired by Dartmouth College.

During a trip to Spain, Beata painted along the route traveled by Washington Irving, a relative of her great-great Grandfather. The artist’s painting of the Tompkins Corners Methodist Church Carriage House currently hangs at the Putnam Arts Council.

"Painting the Valley"
The Lambo Legacy

ON VIEW TILL OCTOBER 20th

Tompkins Corners Cultural Center will present “Painting the Valley : The Lambo Legacy”. For decades, artists Don and Betty Lambo portrayed the landscape and community life  in and around Tompkins Corners where they lived with their 4 children. In addition painting and exhibiting locally, the artist couple traveled  widely, painting and exhibiting throughout North American, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Europe,

Following graduation from Pratt Institute, Don, a native of Amsterdam, NY, and a fighter pilot in WWII, had a successful career in both illustration and fine art. Betty, who came from Harrisburg, PA, also attended Pratt and graduated from the Advertising Design School. After several years in advertising, she also began a career in fine art. She liked to say her local work was how she envisioned the “good old days” in Putnam Valley.

The family exhibit will also include some work of son James Lambo, also a Pratt graduate now working as art director for a major trade publication in New Rochelle.

A reception will be held at the Center on Sunday, September 22, 2-4 PM.  Signature TCCC refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

"BLOSSOM"
Watercolors by Maureen Winzig

Show Runs 7/19 - 8/12

“BLOSSOM,” an exhibit of watercolors by Maureen Winzig,  will be displayed in our Maaike Hoekstra Gallery during events through August 12th.

Winzig’s studies began with illustration, design and commercial art at Pace University, NY in the ‘80’s.  Fine art, graphic art and web design came later at WCC, SUNY Westchester, NY.  Her studies continued privately with local masters concentrating on oil and watercolor techniques and portraiture.  “I have had many other instructors and workshops along the way with continuous proliferation as my best teacher", says Winzig.

BLOSSOM, “Painting flowers with watercolor in the dead of winter is one of my surefire ways to remember the promise of spring.  It’s like my carrot on a string held out before the stubborn donkey of cold dark days leading me back to  the light.  Watercolor, if I let it, splays out so beautifully and creates its own gradients from dark to light.  If you overwork and try to force your way with watercolor… you’re done… its ruined… like with most things of beauty and grace.  Be gentle, patient and free and you just might get a lovely watercolor."

Faces of Fantasy
Art by Michael Garland
Exhibit runs

 May 10 through July 14, 2024

"When I create my fine art paintings, I use my technical ability to work in ways to originate imagery that I might not have an opportunity to make while working as a commercial illustrator or children’s book illustrator and author.  Over my long career, I’ve developed skills to paint pictures of anything I can imagine. When I paint my fine art paintings, I make them to please my own set of aesthetics. Recently, I’ve been working a series of surreal portraits."

In addition to his fine art, which is featured in “Faces of Fantasy,” Michael is internationally known as the author and illustrator of over 40 children’s books, including the award-winning “Get Off My Lawn” and “Widgets Go Walking.” His children’s book, “Miss Smith’s Incredible Storybook,” won the California and Delaware state reading awards. "Seeking the Light"
Art Exhibit by Karin Lemke

Reception Sunday, November 5th 2-4pm

Tompkins Corners Cultural Center will present “Seeking the Light,” an exhibit of recent watercolors by Hudson Valley painter Karin Lemke.

Karin’s journey in the arts began early in life as an accomplished classical pianist and painter. While she chose nursing as her profession, she has always maintained her dedication to the arts. Recognized for its capture of the light, the holy grail for painters, Karin’s work has been exhibited at Howland Center in Beacon and in other Hudson Valley venues, where she continues to study with Patricia Collins Broun.

Karin attributes her “awakenings to landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes” to her family's many land and sea journeys that exposed her to the artistic expression of other cultures, indigenous artists, and the evolution of Western art. While these experiences informed her of the broad scope of art, Karen found her own artistic home with the Impressionists, both in painting and music.

This Exhibit will be on view Sept 1st - Oct 28th
during our events.

Coulter’s love for music is the driving force behind these portraits. “This current exhibition explores a few different genres of music never before shown together as a body of work. I’ll be combining prominent musical figures from the Folk, Bluegrass, Jazz and Blues scene of the 20th century. My goal as a painter is to capture the spiritual essence of my subject using line and color,” says Coulter.

About Songs, Stories & Art
"Where the Good Buzz Goes"

Songs, Stories & Art - Lessons from Strangers
A Multimedia Show by John John Brown

Saturday, September 23rd, 7:30 pm $20

Tompkins Corners will present Songs, Stories, & Art - Lessons from Strangers, a multimedia show by John John Brown. This original project weaves together storytelling songs with the visual arts creating “an imaginative musical performance woven into a unique visual experience.”

Songs, Stories, & Art - Lessons from Strangers is the result of a four-year collaborative effort between Brown and an Indonesian artist named Sapri. Despite living across the globe and relying on Google Translate to communicate pages of detailed notes, Sapri created more than 200 vibrant drawings that help portray Brown’s storytelling songs. Bringing these giant comics and iconic photographs to the stage, Brown takes the listener inside the lives of fourteen unique characters while strumming his guitar and singing beside a projected graphic story, revealing the idea that all people, strangers alike, have a story we can learn from.

The protagonists come from all walks of life, from an aging Vietnam Vet to a trumpet-playing orphan, a married couple debating evolution, to a young man with mental illness wandering the aisles of Walmart. “So well written that every song could be a short story, a treat for lovers of narrative-driven tales.” - Americana UK  https://johnjohnbrown.com/songs-stories-art

This event is supported by a grant from the Anne Anastasi Foundation facilitated by Jonathan Galente and Mary Beth Minton.

Paintings and Sketches by
Jacqueline O’Malley-Satz
Reception - March 26th, 2-4 pm

On view during events from March 5 - April 16

Picture

The work of Jackie O'Malley-Satz will be  showcased in our Maaike Hoekstra Gallery, and will be on view during Tompkins Corners events.

The Artist's reception will have a fantastic mixture of live sketching, Irish music and spoken poetry.  The TCCC Ceili Band, under the direction of Joe Mahon, will perform while Jackie sketches them, just as she has done in the pubs and seisiúns she attended in her trips to Ireland.  Many of her works include calligraphed poems by William Butler Yeats, which Neil Hickey will recite.

The paintings, both watercolors and oils, and sketchbooks were created in Ireland, where the artist immersed herself in the sights and activities of towns like Inis mor in the Gaelic-speaking Gaeltacht, Killarney in the Ring of Kerry, and Dingle along the Wild Atlantic Way. Always carrying her sketchbook along, the artist has captured both the beauty of these areas and the daily life of the people.

Now a professor of art at Orange County Community College in Newburgh, NY, Jackie exhibits her work regularly in galleries across the Hudson Valley and Upstate New York. Entrance to the reception is free, and refreshments will be served.

This exhibit has been made possible by a grant from the Anne Anastasi Foundation.

We will award the Anne Anastasi Foundation prizes of $100, and $50, to the 1st and 2nd place winners. The first-place winner will also be awarded a widely publicized live solo exhibit in the TCCC Maaike Hoekstra Gallery when it reopens, hopefully in Spring/Summer 2022.

"Driven to Abstraction"
Online Art Exhibit
March 1 - April 3, 2021

Tompkins Corners Visual Arts committee has invited several artists to participate in this exciting new exhibit. Abstract art has been of the most intriguing and controversial developments in the art world and presents unique challenges to the artist. Many say that in the desire to most fully express themselves and their world, they are “driven to abstraction.”  Participating artists include many professionals who live and work in New York’s Hudson Valley.

We are pleased to announce the winners of our "Driven to Abstraction" exhibit. With each artist's style so distinct and unique, the process was difficult. Cindy Booth, "Arizona" for Curator’s Award and Arlene Seymour, "The Heart of the Matter" - People's Choice.  Thank you for your votes.
