Ensemble Sangineto
Italian Strings and Voices for World Music
Saturday, May 10th, 7:30 pm

Picture
Ensemble Sangineto is an eclectic group that seamlessly blends ancient harmonies and sonorities with modern rhythms. Drawing on the rich musical backgrounds of its members, the ensemble crafts fresh arrangements that span traditional Irish, Scottish, Breton, and Italian tunes, as well as original compositions influenced by a wide array of genres—from classical and folk to Gregorian chant, musical theater, pop, and Celtic music.
Formed in 2000 by twins Adriano and Caterina Sangineto, the group’s origins lie in a deep familial connection to music; as children of renowned harp and psaltery maker Michele Sangineto, the twins were immersed in ancient musical traditions from an early age. They later encountered popular music, with a special preference for the Irish, Breton, and French traditions.

The ensemble’s unique sound is defined by the delicate interplay between the ethereal tones of the harp and bowed psaltery with the rhythmic textures of the guitar and the intricacy of the three-voice polyphony.  This combination creates a dreamy, ethereal atmosphere that feels both joyful and light.

Over the years, Ensemble Sangineto has evolved, embracing new challenges and broadening its artistic vision. Today, the ensemble is further enriched by the contributions of guitarist and bouzouki player Jacopo Ventura, who joins the original duo to help drive its creative journey.

Don't miss this unforgettable evening of world-class Irish music!

Bruce Foley & John Nolan
Celebrating Irish Heritage Month
Saturday, March 8th, 7:30 pm

Tompkins Corners will welcome Bruce Foley and John Nolan to our stage in an Irish Celebration!

Both members of the Mid-Atlantic Region Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Hall of Fame, Bruce and John will present a concert of traditional Celtic music that showcases Bruce’s rich voice, masterful guitar playing, and expertise on the uilleann pipes, along with John’s virtuosity on the button accordion.

Fresh from Joanie Madden’s Folk ‘n Irish Cruise, celebrating Cherish the Ladies 40th anniversary, Bruce and John  share a musical connection that, as Paul Keating put it, "only really develops through decades of playing together."

Bruce has performed with Scottish folk singer Andy M. Stewart, Irish songman Tommy Sands, and fiddler James Kelly. He has also toured the world with his wife, Mary Coogan, as part of Cherish the Ladies. A career highlight includes playing the uilleann pipes at Madison Square Garden for Pete Seeger's 90th birthday celebration.

John, an All-Ireland accordion champion—and the first American to win the title—is a master of both traditional tunes and song accompaniment. Both musicians are featured on the latest Sailors on the Rock CD.

KJ Denhert
John Cohen Memorial Music Series*
Saturday, November 23rd, 7:30 pm

KJ Denhert, a celebrated NYC-based songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader with a 40-year career. She will be performing with her band, The NY Unit.

KJ is a consummate artist with a rich history. Although she continues to define herself as an “urban folk and jazz” artist, her journey has led her to explore the many genres that influenced her life and music. Her journey continues to push the boundaries of her own definition. Known for her soulful, smoky voice and lyrical storytelling, her sound is unique and timeless.

Performing regularly in New York and worldwide, KJ captivated audiences for over twenty-three years with her all-star band during a residency at the iconic 55 Bar in NYC's West Village. Since the venue’s closure in May 2022, she has established new residencies at Sunny’s in Brooklyn and Arthur’s Tavern in the West Village. Her band, the NY Unit, now performs a late show at Arthur’s Tavern on the last Saturday of each month, and her group, "The Evening News," plays at Sunny’s on the second Friday.

She has released ten albums, and her latest, “The Evening News,” is set to drop on March 29th across all platforms. Her albums are personal, and this, her eleventh, is her first in five years. “The songs on this album are a look at who and what made me who I am today. It is the right time for these particular stories for me.”

Back At It
Sam Krugman, Wolfgang Lagomarsini, Timothy E. Pitt
Opening act - Linda Thornton

Saturday, November 9th, 7:30 pm

The trio "Back At It" can touch the heart with a quiet ballad or electrify your inner dancer with a smooth-grooving R&B tune or a blast of the blues. Singer-songwriter and pianist Sam Krugman, bassist Wolfgang Lagomarsini, and guitarist Timothy E. Pitt draw on their diverse musical backgrounds to infuse Sam’s insightful, original songs with the colors and rhythms of the music they love.

Sam was raised in New York during the ’60s. Whether you were up on the roof or under the boardwalk, music was blasting toward the future. A toe still dipped in big bands and early rock ’n’ roll; folk, country, blues, R&B, and jazz filled the air. Sam’s tunes are built on these musical blocks with lyrics reflecting a grateful life lived so far. Sit back, tap your foot, dream on, and enjoy!

Wolfgang’s versatility and tasteful, rock-steady style made him a go-to player for blues, rock, funk, fusion, Latin, and bluegrass bands that performed at clubs like CBGB’s and The Bitter End and opened for the Dixie Dreggs, Chaka Khan, Tito Puente, and others.

Tim has been in the ensemble of many annual shows at Tompkins Corners. He’s worked as a solo instrumentalist, played in old-timey, bluegrass, and country bands, and accompanied folksingers who’ve opened for John Hartford and Joe Walsh's Barnstorm band. He can be heard on albums by such artists as John Gorka and Christine Lavin.

Tickets are $20 and may also be purchased at the door. TCCC Signature baked goods and beverages will be available.

"Out To Lunch"
Mixed styles from Bluegrass to Jazz to Celtic

Saturday, October 5th, 7:30 pm

What happens when you put five musicians together with backgrounds and influences ranging from Bluegrass to Jazz to Celtic and give them the common goal of making these varied music types come to life and have a lot of fun doing it? You get “Out To Lunch!”

Bandmates Howie Bujese, Larry Cohen, Wayne Fugate, Susan Sassano, Michael Sassano, and Joe Selly have been delighting audiences with a sound uniquely their own since 1980.

On a typical evening with “Out To Lunch,” one might be treated to a smooth rendition of a classic such as Nat King Cole’s “Straighten Up and Fly Right” or Bill Monroe’s “Footprints in the Snow.” From there, the band might just as easily shift gears and perform a monster medley of Celtic dance tunes or some of their own inspired original compositions. While each of these tunes no doubt bears the stamp of “Out To Lunch’s” distinct sound, the respect for the traditions that these tunes come from is readily apparent. Their strong vocals blend to create harmonies that are a distinctive part of Out To Lunch’s musical charm.

TCCC Fall Benefit at Camp Combe
With Jay Ungar and Molly Mason

Sunday, September 29th, 2 - 5 pm

TCCC deeply values our community and relies on your support to continue bringing Tradition, the Arts, and Joy to Putnam Valley. Join us at Camp Combe, just a stone's throw from the Cultural Center, where ample parking and the camp's rich history await you. Come together with friends and neighbors for a great afternoon while you help us grow and thrive!

We're "calling" on you to spend a Fall afternoon immersed in extraordinary music, delicious food and beverages, and a vibrant sense of community. Experience the beautiful music of Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, masters of music and storytelling, and square dancing with Liz Slade.

Jay’s fiddling is brimming with playfulness, drama, soulfulness, and technical verve as he explores the many musical styles and idioms he has internalized and made his own. Molly’s total mastery and inventiveness on piano and guitar is always spot-on, as she supports the tunes and follows the flow of the melody. Her rich and expressive vocals, along with the resonant strains of Jay’s violin, reveal the deep emotions that flow in the duo's veins.

Millions were entranced by the music they did for Ken Burns’ PBS documentary The Civil War. Their performance of the series’ signature tune, Jay’s haunting composition, “Ashokan Farewell,”  earned the couple international acclaim. The soundtrack won a Grammy, and “Ashokan Farewell” was nominated for an Emmy.

Rakish
Scottish and Irish Celtic Music Duo
Friday, September 13th, 7:30

Tompkins Corners will welcome Rakish, the duo of world-class violinist and two-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion Maura Shawn Scanlin and guitarist Conor Hearn. With a shared background in traditional Irish and Scottish music, their performances toe the line between concert music and session music.

The pair gets their namesake from the traditional Irish tune “Rakish Paddy,” an origin that aptly suits the duo. Yet “rakish” itself also suggests something strikingly unconventional in its appearance, and Maura and Conor knowingly embrace this wealth of connotation in their music, drawing on the music they grew up with and performing it with their own slant.

“Explorative and versatile, the duo draws evident inspiration from not just the deep and wide history of Scottish and Irish Celtic composition, but also the precision-focused structures of classical chamber music and a whole array of improvisational styles.” - David Templeton, Strings Magazine

This concert will be held indoors. Light refreshments will be available.

John Cohen, who became their mentor and bandmate, co-founded Tompkins Corners in 2015. John played with the Strugglers at every Brooklyn Folk Festival since the beginning, as well as at every Washington Square Park Folk Festival and many more all across the country, including at the Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, the Newport Folk Festival and more.

The Down Hill Strugglers
Old Time String Band
John Cohen Memorial Music Series

Sunday, September 8th, 4:00 pm

Tompkins Corners will welcome back The Down Hill Strugglers, an old time string band whose music reflects and extends the strong feeling and diversity of sounds found on old commercial and field recordings from as early as the 1920s.

Keeping that music alive with new interpretations, they have released albums on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and Jalopy Records and are featured on the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers film, "Inside Llewyn Davis," produced by T-Bone Burnett.

Old Juniper, The Down Hill Strugglers' new album and the first to feature all original songs and tunes, will be issued by Jalopy Records in August 2024.

“If it’s possible to be at the forefront of something old, The Down Hill Strugglers are right there with this new recording! Imaginative arrangements of interesting tunes played with soul, all while reaching back to the best of the old mountain sounds." - Bruce Molsky

This is the third of four events in this year’s John Cohen Memorial Music Series. The Strugglers are Eli Smith, with whom we collaborate on this series, Jackson Lynch, and Walker Shepard.

A quote about the Strugglers, written by John Cohen:
“They have found resonance with the intensity of rural music, while delighting in the nuances that preserve the individual uniqueness of the genre. This is music that will keep your mind dancing.”

Picture
"Together, the two have found an interesting common ground that's one part Woody-Guthrie-esque ruminations on the modern world and one part transcendent string band roots...new songs, old songs, fiddle tunes, it's all tossed together here in an overarching quest to find an authentic expression from two traditional masters brought together…” - The Folk Alley Review.

Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert
Celebrated Americana Singer/Songwriters
Friday, AUGUST 23RD, 7:30 pm

Tompkins Corners will once again welcome celebrated Americana singer/songwriters Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert. Uniting as kindred spirits with roots-oriented folk songs, gorgeous melodies, and vocal harmonies, the duo continues to dig deeper into their exploration of minimalist writing and production. www.kanegellert.com/

Kieran Kane’s seminal work in The O'Kanes, as well as co-founding the independent label Dead Reckoning Records, laid the foundation for the contemporary world of Americana music. A successful solo artist, collaborator, and songwriter (with songs recorded by Alan Jackson, John Prine, Emmylou Harris, and more), Kieran’s playing is always understated, groove-oriented, and serves the song.

Rayna Gellert turned to Appalachian old-time music at a young age. She became a prodigious fiddler and led a new revival of American string band music through her work with the acclaimed roots band Uncle Earl. She’s easily one of the best old-time fiddlers in the world, a tune-hunter whose arrangements of tunes she’s uncovered become de rigueur at square dances around the country.

This concert will be held indoors. Light refreshments will be available. Tickets are $25 and may also be purchased at the door.

Mike + Ruthy concerts blend artistry and authenticity with fiery fiddle & banjo, emotionally potent harmonies, and dynamic stories that deepen the experience. Tap your toes, dance, or sit back and sing along as Mike + Ruthy “roam effortlessly through the whole span that is Americana, from alt-country to folk to bluegrass." (The Bluegrass Situation).

Mike + Ruthy
(of the Mammals)
Americana from alt-country to folk to bluegrass

Saturday, April 13th, 7:30 pm

Mike Merenda and Ruthy Ungar, perhaps best known as the husband-and-wife duo who is a cornerstone of their quintet, The Mammals, are Hudson Valley-based songwriters who have set the indie-folk scene ablaze.

Singers and storytellers, poets and parents, the two tour with their children in tow, embodying a down-home approach to Americana that is honest, beautiful and raw. Bouncing between festivals and intimate venues, these troubadours bring harmony-driven fiddle and banjo tunes to more than 100 shows annually.

Merenda’s poignant songs paint pictures of the world we want to live in, inspired in great part by his favorite author, Daniel Quinn. His crowd-pleasing piece, ‘Sunshiner,’ is an ode to clean living and was nominated for an International Folk Music Award for Song of the Year.

Ungar’s unique vocal style ranges from a capella balladry to earthy soul and country. She was raised in a folk music family and learned the fiddle at a young age. Her father is fiddler/composer Jay Ungar, best known for his composition Ashokan Farewell which she also enjoys performing.

House of Hamill
Upcycled Celtic Folk

Friday, April 5th, 7:30 pm

Whether they’re ripping through a set of original jigs and reels, adding lush three-part harmonies to traditional folk ballads, or cracking up an audience with stories from the road, House of Hamill puts on a show that captivates audiences from the very first note.

Rose Baldino of Burning Bridgit Cleary and Brian Buchanan of Enter the Haggis first found themselves onstage together at the 2014 Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas City and subsequently formed the duo House of Hamill. Four years and hundreds of shows later, the duo added bass player Caroline Browning.

Today, Pennsylvania-based House of Hamill is a fixture on festival stages across the US and has shared their music and stories on the country’s premier folk stages. Their version of “Pound a Week Rise” rose to #1 on the US Folk DJ charts, and the video for their all-violin cover of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” amassed over 16 million views on Facebook, where it was shared over 400,000 times. Their latest release, “Folk Hero,” captures perfectly the frenetic energy and eclecticism of their always-engaging live show with a lively collection of original instrumentals, reimagined folk ballads, and new songs that showcase the trio’s versatility.

A Christmas Carol
Master Storyteller Jonathan Kruk

Friday, December 1st, 7:30 pm $20

Tompkins Corners will welcome master storyteller Jonathan Kruk back to our stage in a dramatic solo rendition of "A Christmas Carol."

Using a treasure trove of voices and gestures, Kruk creates over thirty characters to create Dickens’ classic. The result is a singular show, intimate and imaginative. This singular show takes you from Humbug to hope for redemption and joy.

Mr. Kruk’s theatrical storytelling has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, The Today Show, The Travel Channel, and at countless schools, libraries, festivals, and historic sites. He was selected “Best Storyteller in the Hudson Valley,” and The New York Times describes him as having “a way with the spoken word, the telling gesture, the sprinkling of humor, and the appropriate costume for a smorgasbord of stories.”

Down Hill Strugglers
Old-time String Band
Saturday, November 18th, 7:30 pm $20

Tompkins Corners will present the Down Hill Strugglers, an old-time string band based simultaneously out of Kentucky and Brooklyn. This is the third of four events in this year’s John Cohen Memorial Music Series.

Some of the best traditional American music, blues, gospel and hillbilly, was recorded on commercial 78 rpm records during the 1920s & 30s. The Downhill Strugglers keep that music alive with new interpretations. They have released albums on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and Jalopy Records and are featured on the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers film, "Inside Llewyn Davis," produced by T-Bone Burnett.

John Cohen, who became their mentor and bandmate, co-founded Tompkins Corners in 2015. He was a musician, photographer and filmmaker who performed and documented the traditional music of the rural South and played a major role in the American folk music revival. John played with the Strugglers at every Brooklyn Folk Festival since the beginning, as well as at every Washington Square Park Folk Festival and many more all across the country, including at the Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, the Newport Folk Festival and more.

A quote about the Strugglers, written by John Cohen:
“They have built their repertoire from some of the best music of the past and they keep it alive and lively. They have found resonance with the intensity of rural music, while delighting in the nuances that preserve the individual uniqueness of the genre. This is music that will keep your mind dancing.”

In honor of Veterans Day, George and Ruth: Songs and Letters of The Spanish Civil War will be presented at Arts on the Lake in Kent on Saturday, November 11, at 7:30 pm and Sunday, November 12, at 2 pm at Tompkins Corners Cultural Center in Putnam Valley.

Arts on the Lake tickets are available here.   A percentage of proceeds will be donated to ALBA – The Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives.

George and Ruth: Songs and Letters of
the Spanish Civil War

Sunday, November 12th, 2:00 pm $20
FREE FOR VETERANS

Directed by Katie Schmidt Feder, the play is a recitation of letters between newlyweds George and Ruth Watt during George’s time as a volunteer in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Folk songs from the period, selected and adapted by Tony Saletan, and performed by singer/guitarist, Albi Gorn accompany actors Nick Nazario and Emrigael Alpern. Photographic images from the period, including many by Robert Capa, are projected during the performance.

George’s son Dan Lynn Watt discovered the letters between his parents in 1997, and with his wife, Molly, wove them into dialogue illuminating the experiences of young Americans who volunteered to fight in the Lincoln Brigade against the Nazi-supported forces of General Franco. Ruth, who remained in New York City as both office worker and anti-war activist, provides the perspective of war’s homefront, while George's letters reveal his passionate commitment to the cause of freedom and democracy.

The play is “a powerful tribute to the courage and resilience of those who fought for justice and freedom during this pivotal moment in history," says Schmidt Feder. "It's a reminder of the profound sacrifices that individuals and communities make in the face of injustice and oppression.”

This version of the piece was originally produced by The Capa Space photography center in Yorktown, NY in conjunction with their This is Robert Capa! Exhibition. That exhibit is now moving to Arts on the Lake where it will be open weekends from Saturday, November 4 through Sunday, November 26. The book, Spain in Their Hearts, signed by author Adam Hochschild, will be available at a discount in both places.

About Songs, Stories & Art
"Where the Good Buzz Goes"

Songs, Stories & Art - Lessons from Strangers
A Multimedia Show by John John Brown

Saturday, September 23rd, 7:30 pm $20

Tompkins Corners will present Songs, Stories, & Art - Lessons from Strangers, a multimedia show by John John Brown. This original project weaves together storytelling songs with the visual arts creating “an imaginative musical performance woven into a unique visual experience.”

This project is the result of a four-year collaborative effort between Brown and an Indonesian artist named Sapri. Despite living across the globe and relying on Google Translate to communicate pages of detailed notes, Sapri created more than 200 vibrant drawings that help portray Brown’s storytelling songs. Bringing these giant comics and iconic photographs to the stage, Brown takes the listener inside the lives of fourteen unique characters while strumming his guitar and singing beside a projected graphic story, revealing the idea that all people, strangers alike, have a story we can learn from.  https://johnjohnbrown.com/songs-stories-art

The protagonists come from all walks of life, from an aging Vietnam Vet to a trumpet-playing orphan, a married couple debating evolution, to a young man with mental illness wandering the aisles of Walmart. “So well written that every song could be a short story, a treat for lovers of narrative-driven tales.” - Americana UK

This event is supported by a grant from the Anne Anastasi Foundation facilitated by Jonathan Galente and MaryBeth Minton.

The Man Without A World
Cine Concert with Alicia Svigals and Donald Sosin

Saturday, August 19th, 7:30 pm $20

Tompkins Corners will present The Man Without a World, a modern-day silent film accompanied by an original live score composed by world-famous Klezmer fiddler Alicia Svigals and silent film music legend and pianist Donald Sosin.

A moving, comic melodrama set in a typical shtetl (village) in Poland, The Man Without A World is credited to the legendary (and imaginary) 1920's Soviet director, Nevgeny Antinov, but the film is anything but old. In fact, Antinov himself is the creation of contemporary filmmaker Eleanor Antin, a world-renowned artist, author, and performer.

"I want my audience to experience this world as if from the inside—but at the same time—with a sense of the distance they have traveled to get there." - Eleanor Antin

Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert
Celebrated Americana Singer/Songwriters

Saturday, August 5th 7:30pm

Tompkins Corners will once again welcome celebrated Americana singer/songwriters, Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert.
From The Folk Alley review of Flowers... "Together the two have found an interesting common ground that's one part Woody-Guthrie-esque ruminations on the modern world and one part transcendent string band roots...new songs, old songs, fiddle tunes, it's all tossed together here in an overarching quest to find an authentic expression from two traditional masters brought together. The album is a delight!"

Kieran Kane’s seminal work in The O'Kanes, as well as co-founding the independent label Dead Reckoning Records, laid the foundation for the contemporary world of Americana music. A successful solo artist, collaborator, and songwriter, Kieran’s playing is always understated, groove-oriented, and always serves the song.

Rayna Gellert turned to Appalachian old-time music at a young age. She’s easily one of the best old-time fiddlers in the world, a tune-hunter whose arrangements of tunes she’s uncovered become de rigueur at square dances around the country.

Larry & Joe
Venezuelan and Appalachian fusion folk
Saturday, June 17th, 7:30 pm
John Cohen Memorial Music Series

ompkins Corners presents Larry & Joe, the duo of Joropo maestro Larry Bellorín (Monagas, Venezuela) and GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and old-time star Joe Troop (Winston-Salem, North Carolina). These two virtuosic multi-instrumentalists fuse their respective Venezuelan and Appalachian folk traditions to prove that music has no borders. Their bilingual (esp/eng) program includes storytelling, humor, and singalongs.

Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. After a decade in South America, Joe got stranded back in his stomping grounds during the pandemic. Larry works construction to make ends meet. Joe's acclaimed "latingrass" band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus, and he shifted into action working with asylum-seeking migrants.

As a duo, they perform on harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, maracas, guitar, upright bass, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions and storytelling about how music and social movements coalesce.

Guy Davis
American Roots Musician

Friday, June 9th, 7:30 pm $20

A two-time, back-to-back Grammy nominee for Best Traditional Blues, Guy Davis has been called "America's greatest link to the blues right now."  He won the "Keeping The Blues Alive" Award and was nominated by The Blues Foundation for Best Acoustic Album of the Year, Best Acoustic Artist of the Year, and Best Instrumentalist.

A musician, actor, author, and songwriter, Guy's  performances feature a mix of his original songs and cover songs by Muddy Waters, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and many others.

Of his album, Kokomo Kid,  Chris Spector of  Midwest Record wrote, "With the acting chops this cat has running through his veins, is it any wonder he can sell anything and make it look easy? A modern, down-home acoustic blues set as inspired by his parents as it is Pete Seeger, as it is the storytelling tradition, this is a sucker Sunday punch that'll have you on your back before you know what hit you."

When asked about his experience as a performer, Guy replied, "There is no tale so tall that I cannot tell it, nor song so sweet that I cannot sing it."

"Out To Lunch"
Mixed styles from Bluegrass to Jazz to Celtic

Saturday, June 3rd, 7:30 pm $20

Tompkins Corners once again welcomes audience favorite, “Out To Lunch.” Bandmates Howie Bujese, Larry Cohen, Wayne Fugate, Susan Sassano, Michael Sassano and Joe Selly, musicians with very different backgrounds, will perform music ranging from Bluegrass to Jazz to Celtic.

This concert will be held indoors.

Québécois Concert
Friday, April 14th, 7:30 pm
$20

Nicolas and Alexis are young Québécois musicians brought together by a common passion for traditional music. The duo has released two albums, Gigues à deux faces (Best Traditional Album nomination at the Canadian Folk Music Awards) in 2017 and un beau petit son in 2019, and have performed throughout Québec, Canada, New England, and Sweden.

Samoa Wilson
Saturday, April 1st, 7:30 pm
$20

Widely regarded as one of the best blues, jazz and folk singers in New York City, Samoa began singing jug band music with her uncle Jim Kweskin at 12 years of age. She has been captivating audiences ever since.

Her choice of repertoire makes the difference: torchy and honeyed renditions of haunting little-known tunes from a woman’s perspective. You won't be able to resist Samoa's sweet rendition of "After You've Gone," sung in the past by Bessie  Smith, Ruth Etting and Ella Fitzgerald, this time with Samoa's fantastic vocal work at the heart of it.

Tompkins Corners hosted Samoa and Jim four years ago. We are thrilled to have her back as a solo performer, several albums later, exploring gospel, ballads, blues, and swinging jazz standards.

Born into the legendary Black Family, (her mother is Frances Black and her Aunt is Mary Black), Aoife has steadily risen to the top of the traditional and folk music scene and has long enjoyed success as an established artist in her own right.

Following her highly celebrated debut album, Carry the Day, which was triumphantly launched at Temple Bar Tradfest in 2016 to rapturous acclaim, Aoife released her much anticipated second album, Homebird, at the Button Factory at Temple Bar Trad Festival 2020. Produced by 12-time Grammy Award winner, banjo and guitar virtuoso Ron Block (Alison Krauss & Union Station, and Oh Brother Where art thou), her second album is in many ways a turning point in her musical legacy. Recorded in Nashville and Dublin, HomeBird is an impressive collaboration featuring the best of Irish folk and Grammy award-winning Bluegrass musicians.

“Folk Singer-songwriter Aoife Scott has an indefinable quality to her lucious voice that simply compels you to listen…and once you listen to one song the rapture is complete, you’re hooked.” - Folk Words

Extremely talented musicians in their own right, Jerron and Dennis have collaborated in many contexts over the years but have recently stepped up their duo project. In 2021 they released a self-named CD of ragtime, blues, 1920s pop songs, and original compositions, which show off their virtuosity on many different instruments. “The sound transports you to some Mississippi river bank in early America.” - Juliet Varnedoe

Jerron Paxton + Dennis Lichtman
Friday, March 10th, 7:30 pm

Paxton, still only in his 30s, is a stunningly talented multi-instrumentalist who has earned a reputation for transporting audiences back to the 1920s. Playing banjo, guitar, piano, fiddle, harmonica, Cajun accordion, and percussion, he mesmerizes audiences with his humor and storytelling. A regular on jazz and blues stages around the world, Paxton has opened for legends like Buddy Guy and Robert Cray and has performed solo shows at TCCC in 2016 and 2019.

“Virtually the only music-maker of his generation…to fully assimilate the blues idiom of the 1920s and ‘30s, the blues of Bessie Smith and Lonnie Johnson.” - Wall Street Journal.

Dennis Lichtman, also a multi-instrumentalist playing mostly clarinet, is deeply entrenched in early to mid-1900s American music. In August 2018, he released Just Cross the River, a project instigated by a grant from the Queens Council on the Arts, culminating with two sold-out shows at Jazz at Lincoln Center.  Lichtman has also performed at Carnegie Hall, major festivals throughout the United States, and on stages in Europe, Brazil, and China. NORA BROWN
Down Hill Strugglers

John Cohen Memorial Music Series
Saturday, November 19th, 7:30 pm

Nora Brown plays old-time traditional music with a particular interest in eastern Kentucky and Tennessee banjo playing. She also sings traditional unaccompanied ballads from southeast Appalachia and beyond. Still only 17, Nora holds a very special place in our hearts. John Cohen was a mentor and brought her to TCCC when she was still known as “Little Nora Brown,” and brought her back in 2019.

The Down Hill Strugglers is an old-time string band based out of Brooklyn, NY, and Louisville, KY, playing songs, ballads, fiddle tunes, and banjo breakdowns. Band member Eli Smith, a close friend of John’s, has collaborated with us on the John Cohen Memorial Music Series since its’ inception, and fiddler Jackson Lynch frequently plays as a duo with Nora.

Playing both separately and together, this proves to be a very special evening.

"Out To Lunch"
Saturday, June 18th, 6 pm

What happens when you put five musicians together with backgrounds and influences ranging from Bluegrass to Jazz to Celtic to Classical, and give them the common goal of making these varied music types come to life, and have a lot of fun doing it? You get Out To Lunch!

Bandmates Howie Bujese, Wayne Fugate, Michael Gold, Susan Sassano, Michael Sassano, and Joe Selly have been delighting audiences with a sound uniquely their own since 1980.

On a typical evening with Out To Lunch one might be treated to a smooth rendition of a classic such as Nat King Cole’s “Straighten Up and Fly Right” or Bill Monroe’s “Footprints in the Snow.” From there, the band might just as easily shift gears and perform a monster medley of Celtic dance tunes or some of their own inspired original compositions. Their strong vocals blend to create harmonies that are a distinctive part of Out To Lunch’s musical charm.
